水泥组分中的石膏也会对混凝土的坍落度产生很大影响。在水泥粉磨过程中,由于熟料温度很高,会使水泥所用的二水石膏发生脱水形成半水石膏、无水石膏,使硫酸盐的活性增加。因二水石膏的溶解度和溶解速率小于半水石膏,但大于无水石膏,故石膏能调节水泥硬化凝结时间。掺入一定量石膏后,会使水泥水化速度变慢,但掺入石膏量不足或过多时,反而会使水泥的水化速度增快,导致浆体丧失流动性。石膏存在时,C3A与石膏反应生成钙矾石。如石膏的活性与C3A匹配,则生成凝胶状钙矾石,覆盖在C3A面,抑制其水化,这时混凝土工作性良好。如果石膏活性不足,生成针棒状钙矾石及水化铝酸钙,造成水泥浆体流动性丧失。如石膏含量过大,则会生成条状次生石膏导致流动性丧失。

现如今,外加剂和水泥的种类繁多,不同的外加剂与不同种类的水泥之间的相容性也有很大的区别。水泥与外加剂的相容性与其对外加剂的吸附量有关。外加剂主要被吸附到水化产物表面。凡是水化快和产生的水化产物比表面积大的水泥,吸附的外加剂就越多,与外加剂的相容性就越差。水泥熟料的矿物组成中,水化最快的是C3A,其水化产物比表面积较大,因此对外加剂吸附较大。水泥中几种矿物对外加剂的吸附能力为:

C3A>C4AF>C3S>C2S

在水泥开始搅拌后,外加剂随之被吸附到水泥颗粒表面,首先吸附减水剂并迅速起水化反应的是C3A、C4AF,而在水泥矿物组成中占绝大部分的C3S和C2S开始吸附并水化反应时液相中外加剂的浓度已经变得很低,且水泥颗粒表面的电位值减小,故混凝土的和易性变差,坍落度变小。
